Lower Back Pains – Are they all the same?
Do you experience pain in your lower back? It’s important to know what exact
condition is causing it!
Different pathologies and impairments can cause pain in the lower back area: conditions
related to bones (lumbar vertebrae and pelvis), joints, nerves and other soft tissues (like
muscles)
Osteoporosis, a condition that affects the bones, osteoarthritis, which affects the joints in the
lumbar spine, disc protrusions and bulges, pressure on the nerves that travel between the legs
and the spine, muscle strains and ligament sprains are just some of the impairments that might
be associated with pain in the lower back. But not all lower back pains are the same! The
characteristic and details of discomfort/pain is different in each of these conditions. Prevention,
treatment and maintenance techniques are also different for each. Sometimes, for example, an
exercise that might be beneficial for a person with osteoarthritis, can be harmful for another
person with a disc herniation. That’s why many times a thorough physical examination is
necessary before starting any therapeutic exercise for treating the lower back pain.
At PhysioD, (Physiotherapy clinic, Toronto, ON), you and your physiotherapist will go through
the history of your injury and pain and will evaluate the daily physical demands and possible
pressures that might contribute to your lower back pain. Then the pain will be assessed with a
physical examination for a final diagnosis. Treatment for the lower back pain will always depend
on the pathology(s) behind it. Your physiotherapist at PhysioD will include manual techniques,
modalities, and suitable therapeutic exercises to address your pain and prevent further injuries.
